Pitta

पित्त — "that which transforms"

Fire · Water

The principle of transformation. Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, and the intellect — converting food into energy and experience into understanding.

Understanding Pitta

Pitta dosha is composed of fire and water, making it the force of transformation in the body and mind. It governs all metabolic processes: the digestion of food, the processing of sensory information, and the discrimination between right and wrong. Pitta is responsible for body temperature, skin lustre, and the sharpness of the intellect.

When Pitta is balanced, a person is warm, intelligent, courageous, and a natural leader. They have strong digestion, clear skin, and a focused mind. They are articulate, ambitious, and decisive — the ones who get things done.

When Pitta becomes excess — through overwork, competitive pressure, spicy foods, or hot weather — it can manifest as irritability, inflammation, acid reflux, skin rashes, and a sharp, critical temperament. The key to managing Pitta is cooling, moderation, and learning when to let go.

Digestion & Metabolism

Pitta digestion is typically the strongest of the three doshas. Pitta types have what Ayurveda calls tikshna agni — sharp, powerful digestive fire. They rarely miss a meal and become noticeably irritable when hungry (the original "hangry").

When balanced, Pitta can digest almost anything. When aggravated, the excess heat can lead to acid reflux, heartburn, loose stools, and inflammation of the digestive tract. Spicy, oily, and fermented foods tend to push Pitta over the edge.

The remedy is to favour cooling, slightly bitter, and sweet foods. Meals should be substantial and regular — Pitta thrives on routine mealtimes. Avoiding eating when angry or stressed is particularly important for this dosha.
